The concept of identity is notoriously difficult to define; in the modern world especially, identities become ever more fragmented and, at the same time, compounded. Identity can range from identification with political constructs like the nation-state over social units like the family down to categories of personhood, such as ethnicity, gender, or class. Even more complex is the result when these identities overlap. Our identities directly impact the reality of our day-to-day lives. They affect how we see society and how it sees us. Moreover, when certain aspects of our identity are shunned, othered or socially excluded, this can swiftly become a matter of civil and, indeed, human rights.
